New Zealand Citizens Living in Australia

If you are a New Zealand citizen, the eligibility for Australian citizenship will depend on whether you have arrived in the country before or after 26 February 2001. On arriving Australia, most citizens of New Zealand automatically get Special Category visa, which is a temporary visa, but allows the visa holder to stay and work in Australia. • be a permanent resident of Australia, or
  • have been in Australia on 26 February 2001 on a SCV or if absent on that date, should have spent a period of 12 months in the country on an SCV in the 2 years immediately before that date
  • have obtained a Centrelink certificate issued prior to 26 February 2004 and which states that you were living in Australia at a particular date
